When you’re ready to do some of the most exciting fishing of your life, come out shark fishing with us. We go out on five hour shark fishing trips that don’t disappoint! We can take small groups out on our sport fishing boats. There are black tip, lemon, hammerhead, and tiger shark in the waters off the coastal Carolinas. The world record tiger shark was caught out the Hurricane Fleet’s back door on Cherry Grove Beach. Who knows, the next record could be set by YOU!
There are some basic things you should know about shark fishing before you ever go out. For one is that these fish are really big. That’s a big part of what makes them so thrilling to catch. Another is that these big fish can put on a real show for you once you get them on your line. The excitement you’ll experience will be phenomenal!
Heavier tackle is required to fish for big sharks. They actually make rods and reels specifically for catching shark and tuna. Many anglers use Penn International Reels with anywhere from 30 to 50 pound test.
Tempting them to you
A key ingredient to catching sharks is the chum slick. This gets the interest of the sharks in the area and brings them in close to the boat. There are two basic types of chum that are used for catching sharks. There is bunker chum that is ground up bunker. It’s oily and produces a slick on top of the water that is quite effective in bringing in shark. Another type is mackerel or blue fish chum. Ground up fish produces the same effect as bunker chum. Some fishermen use buckets while others use bags. The end result is the same. So long as the chum can adequately leak out of the container that it’s in, it will work for you.
What gear to use
Each fisherman has their own preference for what they use as bait. Whole, live bluefish or mackerel works well for many. Filets of mackerel, tuna or bluefish also work for many. It’s always a good idea to use different bait on each rig. Use a heavy leader that is 10-15 feet in length — 100 lb. monofilament, wire leaders or pre-rigged leaders will all work. The usual hook size is 6/0 to 10/0.
Improving your chances
Be sure to float your baits at different depths. Many fishermen prefer pieces of Styrofoam or balloons to use as floats. Send out one line to about 50 yards from the boat and another to 75 yards. Keep a third one in close to the boat for the sharks that come directly to your chum bucket.
It’s all about technique
Let your boat drift along while keeping the drag off your reel. Anglers come from one of two schools of thought – Try to set immediately set the hook (and do it 3-4 times) or let him eat the bait for a bit and then set the hook. It’s all a matter of timing and it’s anyone’s guess what will work best on any given shark.
